The incomparable genius of Caribou (formerly Manitoba), winner of Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize, is the ambitious undertaking of mathematics scholar and brilliant multi-instrumentalist/composer Dan Snaith. Surprising critics and fans with 2007′s infectious pop breakthrough Andorra, Caribou again find their way topping “Best of” lists with their latest release Swim. Snaith, a Canadian-native from Dundas, Ontario who transplanted to England more than a decade ago, has become a leading figure in electronic music. The press in his adopted country have offered ecstatic acclaim for Swim with such descriptions as “mind-bending” (Mojo), “beautifully controlled” (BBC), “majestic” (The Word), and “small marvel” (The Observer). Supposedly gifted with his musical nom-de-plume by a bear that appeared to him during an LSD trip, the electronic virtuoso has built a career of timeless musical offerings. Swim is Caribou’s masterpiece, an album that absorbs club culture sounds weaved within subtle pop frameworks. Impressed critics draw a general consenus that Swim is startling in its precision of sonic detail. Made with help from kindred spirits including Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden, Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan, and Born Ruffians’ Luke Lalonde, Snaith claims that his newest release was borne out of a desire to create “dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water.” (Pitchfork) Inspired by the swimming lessons his wife got him, the meditative activity became conducive to allowing his creative ideas to grow. Snaith refines a particular brand of liquid sound; one that flows back and forth, the sounds sloshing around in pitch, timbre, and pan– dance music that “sounds like it’s made out of water rather than out of metallic stuff like most dance music.” Musical diversity is embedded in Swim, which includes sounds sampled from Tibetan bowls, a Bollywood soundtrack, and French-Canadian musique concrète. The album is a melting pot– blending sounds together in a manner that allows the sounds to flow into and out of the mix. A more complex, multi-layered affair—rife with fascinating rhythms, instrumentation, and vocals— more alluring with each listen.
