Seoul Tickets sales begin at What’s Up? & Raleigh Moncrief Show @ Club Ssam, April 10th

Sacramento-conceived, Portland-transported math pop phenoms What’s Up? are Teddy Briggs (Drums/Keyboards ), Brian Pasos (Bass), and polymorphic instrumentalist Robby Moncrieff, of The Advantage and Marnie Stern. The trio, scheduled for their Korean debut this April by way of SUPERC۞L۞RSUPER Concerts, are most noted for their abstract melodic compositions on complex progressive, art/math rock constructions; producing some of the most playful harmonies atop an intricate, densely arhythmic and highly original musical script. The do-or-die energetic performances gained them a spot on Obey Your Brain Records early last year alongside Man Man and Beirut, and earned them full tours with indie greats The Dirty Projectors,  and Deerhoof as well as shows with Mono, Tune-yards and Animal Collective.

In their superbly-crafted debut album Content Imagination (Obey Your Brain)– recorded above an underground Sacramento art house, the release’s colorful sonic score stands alone; a work written in a foreign musical language not yet caught on by the mainstream. What’s Up?’s execution, stylistically hectic and decidedly lo-fi, sounds altogether precise and robotic while maintaining a unique aesthetic blend of beautifully-distorted synths, tight drum rhythms and odd, but incredibly melodic passages. The EP, approximately thirty minutes long, is at every moment dense with tightly-woven intricacies and refreshing to even the most discriminating audio palette. It remains debatable that the only thing more impressive than the craftmanship behind Content Imagination is the energy and chemistry behind the band’s live performances.

Also joining to support an ambitious beat-based record Combed Over Chrome EP (Obstructive Vibrations) is Raleigh Moncrief; an artist that grows more expansive and ambiguous with each successive track. The tracks are a trans-genred collage of experimental noise-ghetto beats and glitchstep. All tracks feature heavy bass beats and glittering synth arpeggios and samples from the Dirty Projectors, who Raleigh recorded Bitte Orca for.

매쓰팝의 천재들로 주목받고 있는 What’s Up? 죽기아니면 까무러치기 격으로 에너제틱한 그들의 퍼포먼스로 Man Man이나 Beirut가 소속되어 있는 Obey Your Brain레코드사의 스포트라이트를 받아, 인디씬의 명사가 되어버린 Dirty Projectors, Deerhoof와 긴 투어를 함께 했고, 뿐만 아니라 Mono, Tune-yards, Animal Collective 와도 함께 공연했다.

“Slick textures and oscillating harmonies…– San Francisco Guardian
“…exquisite collection of intricate electro-pop chimes and microrythms.” – The Wire
“Effortlessly pretty instrumental electronic pop, sunny and almost whimsical… sincere and unpretentious.” NOW Toronto

Since 2001, Toronto-native indietronic darling Shaw-Han Liem, has been releasing some of the most beautifully organic ambient albums under his stage moniker I am Robot and Proud. Liem’s signature sound of meticulously arranged electropop melodies have earned him tours with bands such as The Constantines, Printed Circuit, Marumari, Ariel Pink, and The Unicorns. The 2008 release of Uphill City offers ten excellently-crafted electropop constructions– a flurry of microsounds, reliant on simple tones and rhythms, but grounded by well-defined song structures and deft control of dynamics. Though delicately composed, many of the tracks on Uphill City mount with bright blippy currents. The audio coloration of Liem’s works, always bright, uplifting, and styled with uptempo beats, also flow with real human sentiments and emotions with details lurking beneath its primary-color laden glossy surface. All arrangements are intricate while remaining instantly accessible to its listeners. Uphill City wins by way of the ease with which it carries its wide-eyed and exuberant musical personality. The arrangements and writing are always intelligent, but more than anything its merit and triumph lies in making a connection with its audience. The upcoming release of Uphill City Remixes & Collaborations (Darla) will feature all-new remixes including contribution from Shugo Tokumaru, Lullatone, and Oorutaichi.
Liem has been participant in the global launch of the collaboratively conceived Tenori-On electro pad by media designer Toshio Iwai and Yamaha. He is also currently lending himself to a collaborative role in the realm of independent video game music, working alongside creator of Everyday Shooter Jonathan Mak on an upcoming videogame, for which he will serve as both music composer and sound designer.

– NOW Toronto
- Brainwashed

I am Robot and Proud
The Constantines, Printed Circuit, Marumari, Ariel Pink, and The Unicorns

Liem has been participant in the global launch of the collaboratively conceived Tenori-On electro pad by media designer Toshio Iwai and Yamaha.

Mt. Eerie (formerly The Microphones)

“… forging sweet tunes, childlike vocals, solar noise, and enigmatic tape collages into one molten mass.” -Pitchfork,  9.3/10 score
The Glow Pt. 2… a lot of people cry and proclaim the end of/beginning of music.” -Fader
“Mount Eerie seems very patient and deliberate… droning, meditative folk-rock.” -The New York Times

Over a decade after the release of Don’t Wake Me Up (1999, K Records), Mount Eerie’s Phil Elverum is touted to be one of modern folk-rock’s most notable personages, ranking cornerstone-status with critics and contemporaries. Since performing under the former moniker The Microphones, Mount Eerie has arrested listeners with stunning creative outputs; works oftentimes heavily-influenced by the Pacific Northwest environs from which he hails. Mostly artistically-hermetic to Anacortes, Washington, Elverum’s surroundings have an immense imaginative grip over his music/production/photography/ publishing– an inspiration so obviously manifest in the very source of his namesake being derived from an actual mountain that looms over the forest where he grew up. Mount Eerie’s artistry is incredibly rich in understated minimalism, subtle esoteric tones, and triumphantly-crowned with organic achievement. These signature artistic markers are tightly woven into the fabric of Mount Eerie’s sonar landscape as much as they are inherent in his surrounding physical environment. Elverum’s music is striking as platform and medium to the junction of spatial naturalism and subliminal, romantic curiosity, always brilliantly highlighted with the most potent and unparalleled verbose/aesthetic detail.

On its original debut seven years ago, online music authority Pitchfork ranked The Glow Pt. 2 (2001, K Records) with a number one spot on their ‘Top Twenty Albums of 2001′ listing. The recent reissue of the album with bonus disc, has proven that Elverum’s most essential work continues to appeal– remaining intact as a culmination of exceptional production and impressive songwriting that stands immune to the test of time. Intense exploration of personal themes, recalling lost loves and childhood memories, are seamlessly captured in a composition so versatile that gentle melodies over muted acoustics seamlessly interchange with more textured layers of indulgent, explosive guitar noise and booming drums. The album continues to make avid listeners of those fortunate in stumbling across its second birth. When home in Anacortes, Elverum operates P.W. Elverum & Sun, ltd., a “family-run poem printer/record label/souvenir vendor” and  creative portal for releasing the products of his refined crafts.

“…mesmerizing music suitable for a film score…” -Pitchfork
“…some of the only performers to legitimize ‘post-rock’ as a term of art”. -PopMatters
“Each track complements the next… a standalone work of utmost excellence and elegance.”  -BBC Music
“Other Truths shows Do Make Say Think more adept at sketching out and imagining their own widescreen landscapes.” -Pitchfork

Toronto’s Do Make Say Think has always managed to gather, balance and synthesize various poles simultaneously – ragged/precise, dirty/clean, atmospheric/stratospheric – forging sonic narratives that combine broad strokes and clusters of detail. Perhaps more than their overtly ‘post-modern’ commingling of various musical genres (psych, jazz, dub, folk) it is this less conspicuous, indefinable ability to maintain such a consistently enthralling fusion of instincts that yields a music so unforced and natural. Certainly a key part of this unquantifiable equation is the band’s self-production, which has always been a hallmark of their offerings. Led by Ohad Benchetrit and Charles Spearin, core members of Broken Social Scene and Justin Small, the 9- member DMST has a toolbox of recording and mixing techniques that cohesively ties together the various elements of their signature sound.
The sixth full-length from Do Make Say Think, Other Truths, defiantly features four longform tracks which trace the inimitable musical arcs that have made this band justly celebrated for their unique audio palette and vibrant compositional forms. Creating some of the past decade’s most consistently rich and rewarding instrumental rock, they buck the trend towards diminishing attention spans, immediate gratification, snappy digital singles and things that go ‘pop’ right out of the gate. DMST admirably stick to their roots and allow the vines that spring from their fertile musical garden to wind, curl and climb for as long as required. More than ever, the players creates wonderful multi-movement instrumental pop-rock anthems (with the occasional mantric or wordless vocal passage) overflowing with attention to tone and timbre, animated by unfussy yet ornate harmony, melody and ploy-rhythm that shoots through the ineffable soul. The four songs on Other Truths are vintage Do Make Say Think, and the album represents the first time since the band’s debut (recorded over a dozen years ago) that they have found themselves with an entire collection of songs that unfold so organically over long duration. As testament to the unfettered evolution of these tunes, the band has titled them simply “Do”, “Make”, “Say” and “Think”.
Ultimately it is tricky to distill what has made DMST magnetic in compelling so many critics and fans over their 13-year history, but inarguably something beyond the sum of its parts always sparkle through their music. An amalgam of many elements present all at once, on every song and through every album: cerebral, emotional, atmospheric, cosmic, pastoral, synthetic, organic, meditative. Other Truths rallies them all once again, in new and dynamic ways, bearing the distinct imprint of the band’s sound – continuously expanding in brilliancy and growing the band’s canon.

OtherTruths 앨범에 삽입된 네 곡은 빈티지한 Do Make Say Think 의 모습이다.

“Precisely programmed digital ear candy.” — Rolling Stone
“BEST NEW MUSIC” — Pitchfork
“Their music is partisanal cotton candy: one part Tom Tom Club, one part Yoko Ono.” — The New Yorker
“Don’t miss the boat on YACHT.” — The FADER
“The energy they brought, the aerobic choreography, the propelling beats, and the catchy repetitive mantras
were irresistible.” — Vanity Fair

Triangle lovers, electro talent heavies, and self-professed “band, belief system, and business”— aquatic musical egos YACHT (DFA Records) showcase their eclectic and cutting-edge blend of avant-pop, playful electronics and acoustic percussion as they tour in their Korean debut. Conducted by band members Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans (Portland, Oregon), YACHT’s extensive resume boasts a European tour with indie elites Yeah Yeah Yeahs, collaborations with New York City’s New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. The ambitious See Mystery Lights, is being touted as one of “Best New Albums” by online musical authority/bible Pitchfork.

The songs on See Mystery Lights– from the bouncy, burbling you-can’t-take-it-with-you screed “The Afterlife” (which plays like a less spastic companion piece to the Mae Shi’s “Run to Your Grave”) to the roller rink-ready vocoder vocals of “I’m In Love With a Ripper”– represent YACHT at their most poppy. It’s a collection of stone jams that finds the band finally as hellbent on experimenting and expanding the boundaries of its sonic scope as it is on having fun. Built on electronic foundations– laser effects, skittering computerized beats, and spacey synth lines (or guitar riffs that have been tuned or distorted to sound like synths)– these new songs are giddy with creative freedom while remaining tethered in service of their melodies. The vocal melodies are bright and buoyant, but delivered (by either band member, or in unison) in a chanted, oftentimes detached monotone that plays up the repetitive lyrics’ mantra-like feel and adds a welcome undercurrent of slacker cool to their otherwise sugary optimism.

White Rainbow (Kranky) is the solo moniker of Portland-based experimental/psychedelic musician Adam Forkner. Forkner’s artistic outputs, including the freshly released album New Clouds platform his enormous musical spectrum which encompasses textures of “blissful space somewhere between dream pop, drum circles, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde electronics.” The music is stunning in capturing audio polarities; a tribal sound balanced with modern aesthetic, altogether intricate yet spacious. Forkner’s startlingly emotive sound has garnered him musical collaborations as instrumentalist and producer to an impressive selection of indie’s finest including Dirty Projectors, Atlas Sound and YACHT.
