Seoul’s most unique series, The Round Robin, hosted by concert-impresarios and art collective Super Color Super, comes to Gwangju. The Round Robin event features the following ecstatic concept: bands setup around the edge of the of the room, with the audience stays in the middle, bands play a song at a time in rotation. No breaks, back-to-back performances; no openers or headliners: just a concert stonehedge formed by six PAs cabinets, fourteen amps, three drums sets, dozens of eyes, and hundreds of ears! The series features the best of several genres of Korean muscians.

The city’s has a long history of p…olitical activism and public demonstration lead to the 1980 Gwangju Massacre, a civilian protest against military rule that was violently crushed by the government. Today, Gwangju possesses an impressive art scene–there’s the Gwangju Biennalle, an internationally renown modern art festival; the “road of art” in the art district; and Gwangju Kunsthalle, an arts and culture venue inspired by similar establishments in Berlin and Seoul. Abandoned warehouses and streetside stalls are being renovated into artist’s studios and galleries. Gwangju is once again flaunting its creativity and radicalism.

Dae-in market, one of the most popular traditional markets in Gwangju,has been growing as a successful cultural spot mixed with the vibe of traditonal market. 30 shops of 260 are used as gallery,club,art shop etc. We can spot some other exciting stuff like mural, vintage shops, gormet’s cheap restaurants that eradiate exotic scent of Gwangju.

KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU is an art project itself. The concept and program involves artists, visitors and the team to interact with each other. This creates new questions, interesting tensions and inspiring moments. As a social sculpture the art is created by the existence of this venue and its interaction with the people.
It is not a white cube to display finished art pieces of international artists for mere consumption. Cultural development will be experienced by new art strategies which pose questions of contemporary life and a global society. KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will invite korean, asian and global artists to perform interaction art and develop new local aspects according to the city and citizens of Gwangju.
