This Will Destroy You (TWDY)는 2005년 산마르코스, 텍사스에서 결성된 포스트락 밴드다. 밴드는, 기타에 제레미 갈린도와 크리스 킹, 베이스와 키보드에 도노반 존스, 그리고 드럼에 알렉스 보어로 이루어져 있다. 그들은 주로 이펙트 기타와 다이내믹을 많이 이용한, 길고 분위기 있는 연주곡들을 작곡한다. 그들의 최신 앨범, ‘Tunnel Blanket’은 2011년 5월에 출시 됐으며, 빌보드 Heatseekers 앨범 차트에 25위로 돌입했다.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 2000년대 중반에 산마르코스, 텍사스에서 결성됐다. 그들의 초기 사운드는 십대 때 다양한 밴드활동을 같이 한 네명의 친구들의 (크리스토퍼 로얄 킹, 제레미 갈린도, 레이먼드 브라운, 앤드류 밀러)상식적인 도착지이다. 2005년에 그들은 6곡이 담긴 데모를 쓰면서 레코딩하기 시작했고, 그 데모는 Magic Bullet Records에서 바로 취입됐다.

그때로 부터 THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 상승 궤도로 접어 들었다. 하룻밤새 비평가들의 극찬이 쏟아져 들어왔고 (“Young Mountain”은 Rock Sound Magazine의 “Album of the Year 2006”을 받았다), 앨범에 수록된 곡들은 영화, 텔레비젼, 인터넷, 비디오 프로젝트 등 다양한 라이센싱 프로젝트들에 전세계적으로 쓰여지게 됐으며, 앨범은 이로 인해 금새 인디 리테일과 애플의 아이튠즈 차트를 섭렵하게 됐다. 이 극도의 열기는 미국의 펜타곤까지도 퍼졌다. 펜타곤측은 앨범의 두곡을 나라의 최상위 군 장교들 앞에서 펼처진 재해 준비 프레젠테이션에서 사용했다.

몇 년간의 쉼 없는 투어는 밴드에게 기나긴 길 위의 삶 속에서 고단함을 느끼게 했다. 하지만 THIS WILL DESTROY YOU는 여기서 무너지지 않고, “Young Mountain”과 “S/T”를 정의한 트레이드마크 사운드를 버리고 전혀 새로운 성격의 앨범을 냈다. “Tunnel Blanket”은 THIS WILL DESTROY YOU의 세번째 정규 앨범이다. 전 앨범들이 미래에 대한 희망과 낙관으로 사람들의 심금을 울렸다면, “Tunnel Blanket”은 좀 더 어둡고 복잡한 인간의 감정, 비탄, 그리고 비극을 그린다. 하지만 결국엔 이 앨범도 전과 마찬가지로 카타르시스를 느끼게 해주며, 본능적으로 원시적이고, 완벽하게 가치있다.
2011년 포스트 록의 모범답안 MOGWAI의 첫 내한공연을 성공적으로 이뤄낸 SUPER COLOR SUPER가, 국내 수 많은 포스트록 팬들이 기다려 온 또 하나의 밴드, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU 의 첫 내한공연을 기획한다. 오는 6월, 이들은 장장 5개 도시를 돌며 이들을 맞이할 준비를 예전부터 단단히 하고있던 많은 팬들에게, 그리고 아직 TWDY 의 마력에 빠져볼 기회가 없었던 이들에게 음악으로써 고요한 폭풍전야부터 폭풍이 휩쓸고 간 처참한 광경까지- 이 모든 순간들을 아낌없이 연주해 줄 것이다.

This Will Destroy You, often abbreviated to TWDY, is an American post-rock band from San Marcos, Texas. In many ways, the initial sound of the band was the logical destination point for four friends (Christopher Royal King, Jeremy Galindo, Raymond Brown, and Andrew Miller) that had been playing in a variety of bands together throughout their teens. In 2005, the group began writing and recording a 6-song demo, which was immediately picked up by Magic Bullet Records. Within weeks, the demo became “Young Mountain,” THIS WILL DESTROY YOU’s first retail full length.

From that moment on, the trajectory of THIS WILL DESTROY YOU was meteoric. Critical acclaim came pouring in overnight (Rock Sound Magazine bestowed “Album of the Year 2006” honors on “Young Mountain”), the songs quickly found marriage to various licensing projects across film, television, web, and video projects the world over, and the album quickly shot up both indie retail and Apple iTunes charts. To fully illustrate the fever pitch of the moment, even the Pentagon was caught up in the hysteria, using two songs in a disaster preparedness presentation held before the nation’s top military brass in the wake of New Orleans’ catastrophic Hurricane Katrina. Suddenly, the choice between band and “real life” became not so clear for all involved.

After some domestic touring surrounding “Young Mountain,” the band paired with John Congleton to record “S/T,” 2008’s follow-up full-length. As day after week after month after year piled up on the road, the rigors and alternate reality of touring life began to set in and take toll. It was amidst this darkened age of despair and equilibratory destruction that the band began to create an entirely new strain upon the trademark sounds that defined “Young Mountain” and “S/T.” “Tunnel Blanket” is the third proper full length from THIS WILL DESTROY YOU. While previous albums managed to strike a universal chord of human hope and near-optimism toward the future, “Tunnel Blanket” is the darker and more intricate sides of human emotion, grief, and tragedy. And at the end, it’s just as cathartic, instinctively primal, and wholly rewarding.
