Wye Oak wrote what became Civilian between December of 2009 and July of 2010. The songs “are, as a whole, about aloneness (the positive kind), loneliness (the horrible kind), moving on, and letting go (of people, places, and things),” lyricist/guitarist Jenn Wasner reveals.
Civilian is a kind of 21st-century folk music, imbued with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic color. Without leaning on conventional structure, the songs beguile with fascinating chords and melodies, Jenn’s voice and riveting lyrics, mesmerizing rhythms, and an intoxicating aural landscape. Jenn sums up the meaning of the album saying, “this collection of songs is called Civilian because I believe everyone wants to be normal, but no one
truly is.”

Walking Dead 의 엔딩곡에 수록되어 많은 리스너들의 관심을 받은 볼티모어 출신의 인디 포크 록 듀오, Wye Oak 은 이들의 앨범 Civilian 을 2009년 12월부터 2010년 7월까지 제작했다. 수록곡들은 하나같이 (긍정적인) 외로움, (끔찍한) 외로움, 새로운 이동, (사람들, 장소들, 그 밖의 것들) 흘려보내기 에 관한 노래들이라고 작사가이자 기타리스트인 Jen Wasner 가 말한다. Civilian 은 농도 짙은 슈게이즈 기타, 멜로딕한 리듬, 그리고 흠 잡을 데 없는 일렉트로닉 색의 물방울로 물든 일종의 21세기 포크 음악이다. 고전적인 형식에 기대지 않으면서도 이 들의 음악은 매혹적인 코드와 멜로디로 듣는 이들을 잡아 끈다. Jenn의 목소리와 눈을 뗄 수 없게 만드는 가사, 넋을 잃게 하는 리듬 그리고 중독성 있는 청각적 풍경.
