RA RA RIOT은 이들이 7년 전 New York, Syracuse의 한 학교에 다니던 시절에 결성되었다. NME 의 top 5 중 한 팀으로 선정되었고, 2006년 CMJ top 10 밴드중의 한 팀 으로 선정되었으며, 이어서 2007년 SXSW에서 수상했다. 같은 해 여름, 밴드 멤버를 잃은 것은 팀 전체에게 있어 커다란 비극이었지만 그럼에도 불구하고 이들은 슬픔을 이겨내고 꾸준히 앨범을 발표했다.
RA RA RIOT은 2007년 후반에 프로듀서 Ryan Hadlock (The Gossip, Blonde Redhead, Islands)와 함께 그들의 데뷔 앨범 The Rhumb Line을 녹음했다. 그들은 뉴 웨이브와 클래식 인디를 거대한 오케스트라적 chamber pop에 능숙하게 혼합시켜 놀랄만한 효과를 만들어냈다. 장대함, 웅장함, 극적임, 그리고 우아한 Ra Ra Riot의 데뷔 엘범은 독창적이면서도 야심차다. 이들이 지닌 열정은 앨범 전체에 걸쳐 고스란히 배어나온다.
두번째 앨범 The Orchard는 2009년 여름과 가을 Death Cab for Cutie와 함께한 미국 투어 이후에 발표되었다. 이 앨범은 밴드의 자신감을 한 단계 올려놓은 놀라운 앨범이었다. Beta Love는 4명의 멤버(보컬 Wes Miles, 기타 Milo Bonacci, 베이스 Mathieu Santos 그리고 바이올린 Rebecca Zeller)가 만들어 낸 첫 번째 앨범이기도 하다.
새로이 구성된 그룹에서 각자의 역할을 실험적으로 재정비한 RA RA RIOT. 그들의 데모곡들은 대부분 Miles와 프로듀서인 Dennis Herring(Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves)에 의해, Oxford, Mississippi, Sweet Tea Studio 에서 만들어졌다. 밴드 역사상 처음으로 Oxford의 따뜻한 기후와 상쾌한 남쪽 지역의 공기 속에서 녹음을 했고, 그들은 이를 통해 긍정적인 자극을 받은 자신들을 발견했다. 이번 앨범(Beta love)의 곡들은 사이버펑크 소설가인 William Gibson의 작품에서, 미래파 예술가인 Ray Kurzweil의 기술적인 특징에서 그리고 트랜스휴머니즘에 대한 사색에서 영향을 받았다.

RA RA RIOT first met seven years ago while attending school in Syracuse, New York. The sextet gained a devoted following after quickly graduating from basement rehearsals and student dance parties. NME honored them as one of the Top 5 and Top 10 bands at CMJ 2006 and SXSW 2007 respectively. The loss of a core member in the summer of 2007 was a huge tragedy, nonetheless, they announced to continue as a band having overcome the grief.
RA RA RIOT spent late 2007 in the studio with producer Ryan Hadlock (The Gossip, Blonde Redhead, Islands) recording their debut full-length, The Rhumb Line, which skillfully melds elements of new wave and classic indie with sweeping orchestral chamber pop to startling effect. Epic and eloquent, dramatic and graceful, RA RA RIOT’s debut was an inventive and ambitious record that consistently conveyed the passions of its creators.
The second album The Orchard was announced after spending much of the summer and fall of 2009 touring the US with Death Cab for Cutie. It was an incredibly self-assured step for the band, delivering both hook-laden pop jams like boy and the new-but-familiar-to-live-audiences too dramatic and ruminative slow-burns like the Anton Chekov/Kate Bush-inspired the orchard and album-closer keep it quiet.
Beta Love marks the RA RA RIOT‘s first outing as a four piece with members Wes Miles on vocals, Milo Bonacci on guitar, Mathieu Santos on bass and Rebecca Zeller on violin forming the core of the group. Exploring and redefining their roles within the new makeup of the group, they made demos created mostly by Miles and producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves) at Sweet Tea Studios in Oxford, MS. For the first time in their history the band recorded in a warmer climate and found themselves stimulated by the balmy Southern air and the physical setting of Oxford. Joined by session drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer) the band enjoyed exploring its potential, experimenting with new influences and exciting sounds.
The album’s songs are informed by the works of cyperpunk novelist William Gibson and futurist Ray Kurzweil’s musings on the technological singularity and transhumanism.
RA RA RIOT will be haunting Korea for Halloween shows (October 30th/31st)!
