Unknown Mortal Orchestra first dropped into the world in late 2010 as a bandcamp account carrying a single called ‘Ffunny Ffrends’.
‘Ffunny Ffrends’ was everything you imagined it might be – alien beatnik pop music that echoed 60s psychedelia and krautrock minimalism with just a hint of gentle weirdness that suggested its roots might equally lie in the verdant indie of the equally distant New Zealand scene.

Ruban Nielson is a New Zealand native who had transplanted to Portland, Oregon, USA with his band The Mint Chicks. UMO was a project conceived as Ruban’s escape hatch to a new musical dimension where his vision of junkshop record collector pop could be realized in a sound that recalled Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone and RZA jamming on some kids TV theme too dark to ever be broadcast.
After disbanding New Zealand’s the Mint Chicks, Nielson planned to quit music and take on a day job. As a hobby, he continued making psychedelic demos in his basement using samples. Soon, music took over as a career again, and his fun brand of experimental pop ended up in the hands of Fat Possum Records, who released Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s self-titled debut in the early summer of 2011.

In September 2012, Unknown Mortal Orchestra announced that they had signed to Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir) and began crafting their second full-length album. UMO’s sophomore album is titled II and was released on February 5, 2013.The first single from the album, entitled “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)”, was first available as a 7″ on their tour with Grizzly Bear.

II received wide critical acclaim. Clash Music gave it a 9 out of 10, saying “from opener ‘From The Sun’, which recalls George Harrison-psychedelia, to the tender Family Stone shuffle of the closing of ‘Secret Xtians’, ‘II’ displays both a glowing warmth in its production and a deft use of space that illuminate Nielson’s superbly crafted compositions.” Paste Magazine called the album “a modern, beat-heavy take on ‘60s psych, with plenty of hooks and fuzz to get you hooked and feeling fuzzy.” NME praised Ruban’s ability to turn his songs into “works of warm, fuzzy beauty.”

During the winter of 2013, Unknown Mortal Orchestra capitalized on the success of II and embarked on a world tour. The tour started off with shows in Australia, and hometown shows in New Zealand, followed by several stops in Europe. The band then toured extensively throughout North America with opener Foxygen. In March 2013, Unknown Mortal Orchestra was named one of Fuse TV’s 30 must-see artists at SXSW. Unknown Mortal Orchestra consistently sold out shows in both the UK/Europe and in North America, and as a result of their success on the road they announced in early April that they would extend their touring. This summer the band performed at a number of major European festivals, including Roskilde Festival, Pukkelpop and Lowlands, and early in 2014 they will debut their sound in South Korea!

Unknown Mortal Orchestra 는 2010년 말 bandcamp에 올린 싱글 ‘Ffunny Ffrends’를 통해 처음으로 세상에 자신들의 존재를 알렸다. ‘Ffunny Ffrends’ 는 여러분이 추측하는 그대로 60년대의 사이키델릭적인 에코와 krautrock(70년대 독일의 실험적 락 장르) 미니멀리즘이 만들어낸, 뉴질랜드의 신선한 인디 씬에 그 기반을 두었을 것이라 짐작되는, 점잖은 방식으로 특이한 제3세계 beatnik 팝이었다.

멤버 Ruban Nielson은 자신의 밴드 The Mint Chicks와 함께 미국 오레곤의 포틀란드로 거처를 옮긴 뉴질랜드 토박이다. UMO는 Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone, RZA 가 ‘방송에 내보내기엔 너무 암울한 어린이 프로그램 테마 송을 작업한다는 가정 하에 나올 법한 음악의 실현’이라는 전혀 새로운 차원의 음악을 만들어내기 위해 시작된 Ruban의 고물 레코드 수집가스러운 프로젝트였다.
그의 뉴질랜드 밴드 The Mint Chicks 가 해체한 뒤, Nielson은 하던 음악을 때려치우고 새 직장을 얻으려 했다. 물론 그의 지하실에서 샘플을 사용해 사이키델릭 음악 데모를 만드는 취미는 꾸준히 고수했다. 머지 않아, 음악은 다시 그의 주업이 되었고, 실험적 팝을 다루는 그의 재미난 브랜드는 Fat Possum Records(살찐 주머니쥐 레코드) 라는 이름을 달고 2011년 초여름, Unknown Mortal Orchestra의 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 앨범을 발매하게 된다.

2012년 9월, UMO 는 Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver,Volcano Choir 등이 속한 레이블) 와 계약했고 그들의 두 번째 앨범 작업에 착수했다. UMO의 두 번째 풀 렝쓰 앨범 II 은 2013년 2월5일에 발매되었다. 앨범의 첫 번째 싱글 “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)” 은 Grizzly Bear와의 투어에서 7″ 로 가장 먼저 발매되었다. 앨범 II 는 많은 비평가들의 찬사를 받았는데, Clash Music은 10점 만점에 9점을 주며 “첫 곡 ‘From The Sun’ 은 George Harrison의 사이키델리아를 연상시키며, 마지막 트랙 ‘Secret Xtians’은 부드러운 Family Stone 식으로 끝맺음 한다. ‘II’ 는 은은히 빛나는 따뜻한 프로덕션과 능숙한 공간감을 통해 Neilson의 섬세하고 멋들어진 작곡 실력을 더욱 빛내준다.” 라는 평을 덧붙였다. Paste Magazine 은 이 앨범을 두고 “현대적이면서도 60년대 사이키델릭을 연상시키는 묵직한 비트와 풍부한 훅과 퍼즈가 당신을 흠뻑 취하게 만든다.” 라고 했으며 NME는 Ruban의 음악을 “따뜻하고 몽롱하게 만드는” 능력을 높이 평가했다.

2013년 겨울, Unknown Mortal Orchestra 는 앨범 II 의 성공을 발판 삼아 월드 투어 길에 나섰다. 투어는 호주에서 시작되어 뉴질랜드, 그리고 유럽으로 이어진 후, 오프닝 밴드 Foxygen과 함께 광대한 북미 투어를 함께 했다. 2013년 3월 Unknown Mortal Orchestra는 Fuse TV가 선정한 SXSW에서 꼭 봐야 할 30 팀 중의 한 팀으로 선정되었다. UMO는 미국/유럽 그리고 북미에서 연달아 매진 공연을 기록했고, 이와 같은 투어의 성공에 힘입어 4월 초, 그들은 투어를 연장하기로 결정한다. 올 여름 이 밴드는 유럽의 Roskilde Festival, Pukkelpop 그리고 Lowlands와 같은 유명한 페스티벌에서 무대를 가졌고 2014년 1월, SuperColorSuper를 통해 한국에서 첫 공연을 펼칠 예정이다.
