Unknown Mortal Orchestra (이하 UMO) 가 한국을 찾는다. 2015년 3집 <<Multi-Love>>를 발매한 후 2년여만이다.
“우리의 과거의 매듭은 다시 풀리지 않고, 보이지 않는 거미줄처럼 우리 주변을 맴돈다. 이따금 비추는 태양의 간교한 빛에 비춰질 뿐…..” UMO의 프런트맨 루반 닐슨(Ruban Nielson)은 <<Multi-Love>> 앨범을 통해 세 명의 사람이 함께 할 때 발생하는 공허함, 끈적한 열망, 상실감, 욕망의 형상에 대해 이야기한다. 닐슨이 전작 <> 에서 혼자의 고독을 이야기 하였다면, <<Multi-Love>>에서는 함께하는 것의 고통에 대해 이야기한다.
UMO는 데뷔 앨범이었던, <<Unknown Mortal Orchestra>>가 발매되면서부터 평단의 관심을 받기 시작 했고, 피치포크, 언컷 등을 비롯한 각종 음악 매체에서 높은 관심을 받으면서, 뉴질랜드 등 여러 나라의 시상식에서 수상을 하였다. 그 후 2집 <>를 통해 전 세계적인 관심을 받기 시작했으며(Uncut 90, CMJ 80, Pitchfork 73), <>의 아주 성공적이었던 월드 투어로 자신들의 입지를 증명하였다. 이미 궤도에 오른 그들은 2015년 <<Multi-Love>> 발매(NME 90, Paste Magazine 86, The Guardian 80)로 각종 인디 신곡 차트를 석권하며 미국, 영국, 유럽 투어도 승승장구 하였다.
UMO의 음악을 굳이 짧은 단어로 표현해야 한다면, “새로운 실험”이라는 단어가 가장 적합할 것이다. 요즘 많은 아티스트들이 싸이키델릭의 뿌리에 대한 깊은 충성심을 보인다면, UMO는 끊임없는 새로운 실험을 통해 그들만의 새로운 화학약품을 만들듯이 섬세하게 음악을 그려낸다. 하나의 장르에 갇혀버리는 것이 아니라 자신들의 음악이 그저 UMO라는 장르가 되도록 연구하는 것이다.
2013년 첫 내한공연을 했던 그들이 4년만에 다시 한국을 찾는다. 끊임 없이 변화하는 그들인 만큼 이번 내한 공연은 절대 놓쳐서는 안될 것이다. 2013년의 그들이 있었다면, 2017년의 그들은 분명 다른 모습일 것이다. 물론 2020년이 되어 버리면 또 다른 모습일 것이기 때문에, 이번 내한 공연은 크나큰 메리트를 갖는다. 이번 공연은 한국 인디의 새로운 빛이라 불리는 ‘실리카겔’의 오프닝 액트로 시작될 예정이다.
다시 한국을 찾는 그들을 반겨줄 시간이 곧 다가온다.

The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together. Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band’s already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson’s vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It’s more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren’t quite like anyone else’s. I think that’s much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre’s touchstones so vital, constant exploration. We are happy to have the band return to South Korea.
